Experience, Training & Expertise

Ruth Fisher brings a lifetime of experience with horses to her work as a professional bit and bridle fitter. Riding and working with horses from a young age, she has developed a thoughtful, horse-centred approach grounded in classical principles and correct, sympathetic horsemanship.
Ruth has extensive knowledge of equine head and oral anatomy, biomechanics, and how different bit designs and bridle styles influence comfort, communication, and performance. Every fitting begins with a detailed physical assessment of the horse’s head and mouth, followed by practical evaluation of how the bit and bridle function in movement.
Her approach recognises that successful bit and bridle fitting is never about equipment alone. Rider influence, balance, and clarity of the aids are considered as part of the overall picture, ensuring recommendations are fair, appropriate, and sustainable.
Ruth works with horses at all stages of training, from young or sensitive horses to established competition horses, and tailors each fitting to the individual rather than following trends or quick fixes. She is known for her calm, patient manner and her ability to explain findings clearly, helping owners and riders understand the reasoning behind each recommendation.
Where appropriate, Ruth works collaboratively with veterinarians, dentists, physiotherapists, and trainers to support the horse’s comfort, confidence, and long-term wellbeing.

What Drives Us

Ruth Fisher is driven by a deep commitment to improving the comfort, understanding, and long-term wellbeing of horses through thoughtful, fair practice. She believes many training and performance challenges can be resolved by looking carefully at the foundations — correct tack fit, rider awareness, and clear, sympathetic communication.
Her work is motivated by a desire to help horses feel confident and understood, and to empower riders with the knowledge and feel needed to make informed, compassionate choices. Guided by classical principles, Ruth values correctness over quick fixes and prioritises solutions that support the horse’s physical and mental soundness over time.
At the heart of her work is the belief that when comfort, clarity, and understanding come first, a more harmonious and trusting partnership between horse and rider naturally follows.

Frequently asked questions

Got Questions? Discover the answers in our FAQ.

How long does a Bit and Bridle consultation take?

Most appointments last around 90 minutes depending on your horses needs. Young, sensitive, or complex cases may take slightly longer.

Do I need to prepare my horse beforehand?

Yes- Please ensure your horse is in a stable or tied up in a safe environment. Have all your tack ready to go on, but please don't tack up before I meet your horse

Will my horse need to be ridden during a bit or bridle fitting?

In most cases, yes. Seeing your horse ridden helps assess contact, comfort, and communication. If riding isn’t possible, an in-hand assessment can still be carried out.

How soon will I see results?

Most horses show instant changes in comfort and way of going. This will be felt within the time I am with you.
I do recommend giving your some time with the new equipment in the following weeks to allow their muscles to adapt to their new way of going.

Do you sell bits or bridles?

No. I'm a totally independent fitter, meaning I am not aligned to any brands. I don't carry stock for sale, and this allows me to carry a huge kit of varying brands for trial.

Which areas do you cover?

I cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, and surrounding areas—based around Retford, Nottinghamshire, parts of South Yorks and North Lincs

I will travel further if there are enough horses in one area. Please contact me to discuss

Do you offer yard visit discounts for multiple horses?

Yes. Multi-horse bookings and yard days can reduce travel costs and overall fees.

What if my horse is nervous?

That’s absolutely fine. All sessions are carried out calmly and at the horses pace. Welfare comes first, and no animal is forced into discomfort.
